The story of Jephthah's sacrificing his daughter in Judges Chapter 11 has always bothered me. Funny how no church I have ever been to (as far as my memory goes) has ever preached on that story.
While browsing online today I came across some interesting commentary that shed some light on this troubling difficult to understand passage of scripture.

The answer is more simple than that. The vow was a vow of celebacy. He did not sacrifice her as a burnt offering. It was a conditional vow. If the appropriate animal would have came out the door, it would have been a sacrifice, but since it was his daughter, it was to be that she would be consecrated to the Lord in His service as a Nazarite. She would never get to marry and have children and is why she bewails her VIRGINITY (NOT her impending DEATH); Jephthah also is sad because she is his only child and would not have his legacy live on to give his inheritance to, ect.
