Do people really spend this much at the Grocery Store?

Somebody needs to teach the government how to shop. This is what the government thinks people need to spend on groceries per week, Anyone else think this is way out of wack and very high. I calculated the weekly cost for groceries for our family of 4 according to this-- the Liberal plan came to $312 per week, Thrifty plan $159 per week. Even before my adventure in couponing which I started this week I could do better than this and we eat very well lots of fresh produce and lean meat. Granted I cook a lot from scratch but even so. Sheesh

My Menu Plan for Dinners this Week

Ground Beef Stroganoff & Egg Noodles Peas

Lime Sauced Chicken & Caesar Salad Ranch Potatoes

Chiles Rellenos Quiche Cantaloupe

Roasted Pork Tenderloin with Black Beans Yellow Rice

Ravioli Florentine Garlic Toast

Chicken Cobbler Pear Gorgonzola Salad

Mexican Roll-ups Strawberries Chips & Salsa

I Spent $87 at the Grocery store and saved $43 with sales and coupons this week. Without the sales and coupons my bill would have been $130. This was a full weeks worth of groceries for a family of 4 (15yrs and up). It included staples that were not on sale. There were only 2 non grocery items and they were dental floss and listerine. This did not include any paper products, cleaning products or personal products other than the listerine and dental floss. I bought one item off the list cause the meat guy showed me that corned beef was on sale for $1.99 a pound and that was an awesome price and my Husband loves corned beef and I usually only fix it in March - go figure. I will have to figure a corn beef dinner in next weeks meal plan.

Anyway it is hard to do a complete comparison as i had meat in my freezer from previous sales and I have most staples on hand. I have been spending around $150 for just groceries per week but that is what the Thrifty Gov't plan is suppose to be. I know people that feed their families very healthfully for much less. My personal goal is going to be to stay under $100 per week for our family of four which includes a twenty something and a teenage boy. However I know other families that do way better than this. Just a challenge to me and I love to cook.
How is your grocery budget? What do you spend? Here is another interesting link It is the Government Thrift Menu Plans along with recipesIt is interesting

12 Weeks of Our Favorite Family Dinners

Several blogs I have looked at lately (and you all know which ones they are LOL) have been posting 8 weeks worth of dinner menues. So here is mine and it is a 12 week rotation. Many of the meal plans I have looked at assign a different type of main course for each day such as beef, chicken, fish or veg. Mine is organized a bit differently. For instance, for Sunday dinner I like to have a big roast or pasta meal usually so I can have leftovers to use for other meals. Monday is usually crock pot day but not always. Tuesdays are usually kid pleasing or fairly easy meals to throw together. I try to have no more than 3 red meat meals a week (You'll will notice that some weeks have 4 red meat meals but then are usually followed by a 2 red meat meal week- It averages out to 3 per week. It probably should be less but my family likes red meat and I just don't have a big enough repetoire of meatless meals. To reduce the red meat meals you could substitute vegetable meat substitute crumbles such as Boca or Morningstar farms, or use ground turkey in place of any ground beef recipes. Saturday I like to grill or cook outside if possible so most Saturday meals can be prepared outside on the grill. Friday is for fish or mostly vegetarian meals. I say mostly vegetarian because most of my vegetarian meals are not 100% vegetarian. I try not to have a pasta meal next to a rice meal, and I try not to have any same kind of meat 2 days in a row. I use to do a pizza night once a week, but have cut that back to every other week. Darling son gets plenty of pizza through school lunch, scouts and youth group to give him his weekly fix of pizza.

This is just a master rotation list. I do not stick to this, I just use it as a guide. As you can see this master list doesn't take into account nights when we eat out or have leftovers piled up or holiday meals. It is just used as a jumping off point. Also, I have not included all the vegetable and side dishes that I usually serve with the main dish.

This is just a chart of the main dishes. Yes I do serve vegetables and or salad with most meals unless it is a casserole or one pot dish that has the vegetables included.

Serving Size: 6

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1/4 cup unsifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 cups milk
2 1/4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided (I use cabot %50 reduced fat cheddar)

Directions:

Cook elbow macaroni for 10 minutes in boiling water. Drain in colander. Preheat oven to 350°.

In 2-qt. saucepan, melt margarine over low heat. Stir in flour, salt, pepper, and mustard until smooth. Turn heat to low. Add 2 cups of the grated cheese, stirring constantly until all cheese is melted.

Turn elbow macaroni into 2 qt. greased casserole dish. Then pour cheese sauce over top of all, making sure sauce is mixed in well throughout. Mix bread crumbs and cheese and sprinkle over top.

Menu Plan Monday

Menu Plan Monday is Such a wonderful idea. I use to belong to a What's For Dinner Forum way back at the beginning of the WWW, but that forum closed a long time ago. Menu Planning is one thing I do well. OK I am bragging a bit, that is because my other household skills need improving.

My menus are too much focused around meat entrees. I am trying to change that with at least a couple of vegetarian type entrees a week. The classic meal planning I was taught was a meat entree, a salad opt., vegetable, and starchy compliment. That is old school in todays world, so I am trying to adapt more. I also try to do a roast of some kind on Sundays to have meat leftovers for the week for salads and sandwiches.

Monday: Chicken Paprika. (using the extra grilled chicken from last Saturdays dinner that I froze.) Served over noodles. Green beans

Tuesday: Homemade Pizza Night. (Can be vegetarian)

Wednesday: Crock Pot Split Pea Soup, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Thursday: Sweet-Sour Pork Chops Over Rice

Friday: Spaghetti with Italian Marinara Sauce (I make up a big batch of sauce and keep it in 2 and 4 cup portions in the freezer), Tossed Salad, Broccoli Spears

Saturday: Hamburgers on the Grill, Grilled Potato Wedges, Hamburger Fixins.

Sunday: Savory Roast Pork and Apple Stuffing.
